A friend invited me to join an opportunity. I trust her, so I was interested. I watched two YouTube videos that she sent me, and I wanted to learn more, so I began looking at the list of videos on the company’s YouTube channel. Then I clicked one video that didn’t feel authentic. It looked like AI. That made me begin to research the partner company and its founder who was talking in the video.

Consider this an AI scam alert. The goal isn’t to make you scared of AI. The goal is to show you how to detect AI, so you can protect yourself, your money, and your reputation.

Let me say this clearly, using AI isn’t something to hide. I use AI. A lot of us do. The issue is when people use it to create a fake sense of trust—fake people, fake proof, fake urgency. AI should make your work easier and your content clearer, not push people into decisions they wouldn’t make if they had the full truth.

WHY THIS MATTERS IN 2026

A few years ago, you could often spot a scam because it looked sloppy. Now, AI makes it easy to create content that looks professional enough that you will overlook it:

  • a video of a person who looks like someone you could know
  • a voice that sounds trustworthy
  • testimonials that sound convincing

And when a link comes from someone you trust, your brain naturally relaxes. That’s normal.

ABOUT MY FRIEND

My friend isn’t the scammer. She shared it because she was excited about the opportunity and I’m sure she trusted the person who shared it with her. That happens every day—people get energized by glowing promises, especially when it’s tied to making money, generating income fast, or gaining a big following.

The risk is when excitement causes us to skip past verifying the information. And when AI content is involved, it’s easier than ever to believe something is “real” when it isn’t.

Here’s the part most people don’t say out loud: this is how good people end up publicly vouching for something they haven’t fully verified yet. That can create unnecessary embarrassment later when the truth comes out.

I know because early in my online marketing journey, I got caught off guard when several opportunities were presented to me, so I am speaking from experience.

THE AI REALITY CHECK I RAN (BEFORE I WENT “ALL IN”)

This is the AI reality check I recommend before you click, pay, share, or invite anyone else.

  1. Identity check: who are the real people?
    If there’s a “CEO,” “COO,” “advisor,” or “team,” can you verify them outside the videos and the website?

    • real career history (this executive has no real bio, no LinkedIn profile)
    • consistent name and title across sources
    • recommendations from sources not directly affiliated (not just reposts and paid promotions)

    Red flags that I saw were:

    • the executive’s very common American name (one that you may choose when making up a fictitious character because it is that easy)
    • when researched, the executive only exists in videos and on their website
    • there is no other proof this person exists. He has no listed career prior to this company, which was founded in 2024.
    • how similar the man in the video looks to a U.S. government official.
  2. AI content check: does it look or sound synthetic?
    You’re not trying to “prove AI.” You’re asking yourself, does this content feel authentic and consistent? Look for:

    • lip-sync that feels off
    • unnatural facial movement or blinking (or lack of blinking as was the case in this instance)
    • voice that sounds monotone, too clean, too flat, echoed, or oddly paced
    • fake backgrounds and visuals that feel AI-generated (like the fake Macbook and different office set up in each of these videos)
    • a mismatch between the voice and the face
    • over exaggerated hand movements

    In one video of the executive that I watched, this man had one hand larger than the other, yet in other videos, both hands were similar to each other.

  3. Claim check: can you verify the big claims?
    If they claim licensing, partnerships, audits, or “compliance,” don’t accept screenshots as proof. Many of us have seen enough reports on Ponzi schemes to know we should verify this on your own. Also: pay attention to language like “guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or “daily returns.” Certainty is often used to rush decisions. What I found here was jaw –dropping.

  4. Proof check (real, verifiable, not “looks legit”)
    Is there proof you can verify yourself, outside of their own content? What to look for:

    • Clear, consistent details about who they are and what they do (names, company info, how it works)
    • Information that matches across multiple places (not just one website or a few videos)
    • A real trail you can confirm independently (not screenshots, not “trust me,” not recycled testimonials)

    Red flags:

    • Proof is mostly videos, hype posts, testimonials, or screenshots
    • Details change depending on who you ask
    • You can’t find anything credible outside of their own pages
  5. Pressure check (urgency, hype, and “share it now” energy)
    Ask yourself, are you being rushed to act or share before you fully understand it? What to look for:

    • Secrecy (“keep this private,” “don’t post about it,” “don’t ask too many questions”)
    • Emotional hype without clear explanation
    • Encouragement to promote it before you’ve tested it yourself or gotten real results

    Bottom line: If they can’t answer normal questions calmly, or they push you to move fast, pause.

COMMON AI SCAM PATTERNS AND AI SCAM EXAMPLES

These are common AI scam cases and patterns I’m seeing right now. Not theory. Patterns.

  1. AI scam voice cloning – Someone uses a short clip of audio to mimic a person’s voice and create urgency: “I need help right now,” “don’t tell anyone,” “send it today.”
  2. Deepfake imposter videos (AI scam YouTube and beyond) – A realistic-looking “CEO,” “advisor,” or familiar face appears in a video to build credibility for a platform, product, or investment.
  3. AI-generated phishing and AI scam messages – Emails and texts that feel personal and accurate (because AI helped write them) designed to get you to click, “verify” an account, reset a password, or share a code.
  4. AI investment scams (often tied to crypto, but not limited to crypto) – A confident spokesperson, “proof” screenshots, big return promises, and instructions that move you quickly from curiosity to payment.
  5. Fake websites and cloned brands (AI powered scam detection matters here) – AI-assisted copy and design make scam websites look legitimate, even when the business behind it is not. Clean design is not the same as credibility.
